Buses have been the first choice for most local travellers in Beijing for a long time. But questions like ″How many bus routes are there in Beijing﹖″ or ″What is the best way to get to B from A by bus﹖″ would probably baffle even the veteran Beijingers partly because Beijing is too big partly because Beijing is changing at fast speed. However information of this kind is quite important for people living and working in Beijing. Furthermore for a big city such as Beijing promoting the use of public transport is an inevitable trend.
Against this background Zhang Yushi a second year student of Communication Engineering in Beijing Communication University compiled two useful handbooks entitled ″The Bus Stop Directory of Beijing Bus Routes″ and ″The Guidebook for Changing Buses in Beijing″ for everyone who lives in this city.
Zhang started his research on Beijing bus routes when he was in grade 5 at primary school.
When he grew older he went out more often with his classmates and friends he began to find out that they didn't know much about the city they lived in everyday. By then he first formed the idea of collecting the information of all the bus routes in Beijing and compiling it into a handbook for the public use.
After he graduated from junior high school Zhang Yushi got the latest map of Beijing and typed the information of all the bus routes on the map into his computer thus completed his first handbook of Beijing bus routes. It was a thin handbook of only 28 pages in small prints which recorded more than 400 bus routes.
Later he found that the information on the map was sometimes inaccurate and incomplete. For example some changes of routes were not shown on the map while other cancelled routes were still there etc. So he felt it necessary to update the information. Whenever he found some changes of bus routes which were not shown on the map published by the public transport company or travel guidebooks he would report his findings to relevant authorities or institutions. Zhang Yushi has spent ten years doing research on Beijing public transport. Therefore he has his own views on how to improve Beijing public transport both in terms of theory and practice. For example some longer but less efficient bus routes in his view should be shortened. As for some current traffic problems in Beijing he thinks that economic pressure may have led to some drivers breaking traffic regulations by changing route or jumping queues.
